Educational Programs
Our personnel and staff is made up of music studio teachers, former and current educators in public/private schools and higher education, as well as gifted musicians who are experts in other fields, as well! We would love an opportunity to speak to your class (or homeschool group) in or out of the classroom. The following listings are designed for classroom bookings, but we have also hosted pre-concert lectures, walkthroughs, and demonstrations for various small groups. We are open to your ideas and happy to find a way to teach you more about music, the orchestra, and what goes into running a nonprofit organization!
Science of Music
Explore the relationship between music and science, featuring hands-on learning through instrument construction, interactive experiments, and instructor demonstrations that foster music appreciation and understanding of music and science principles.

Science & Symphony
An upgraded version of our “Science of Music” class, expanded into a longer class session per day. Students each will construct a banjo to take home, and learn how to play tunes on it!

The Music of Lincoln’s Day: Stephen Foster
Explore the world of Abraham Lincoln and our evolving American culture from the Pioneer Days to the end of the Civil War through the songs of Stephen Foster, discussing ways that his music was influenced by the culture of the day, and is still part of the fabric of our culture today.

Introducing the Color Project
The Hillsborough Street Jazz Trio presents an all-new creative program that encourages creativity and direct engagement with music. This 20-30-minute program (which can be extended to 60 minutes; we’re flexible) is recommended for K-5 general classrooms and/or art specials classes. Students will not be told in advance the style of music—only the color that inspired it, and will be asked to create pictures to match the music, the texture of the music, and any associated thoughts or feelings it evokes to them—as the music is happening. Crayons and paper can be provided, or any art materials on hand can be used.
Examples of songs and their forms include:
Maroon (fast jazz waltz—D minor)
Midnight Blue (slow 12 bar blues)
Turquoise Blue (based off Navajo melody)
Blue-Violet (12 bar blues—G major blues shuffle.)
Cornflower (based off Appalachian hymn)
Green (mid-tempo—Dorian, sparse—8 bars)
