Classical Performances for 2017-2018

Homecoming, Sunday, October 22, 2017, 3PM, Jones Auditorium, Meredith College  with guest soloist Erika Boysen, flute professor at UNC Greensboro.  Other selections included Dvorak’s Symphony No 9, The New World and Copland’s Letter from Home. 

Rising Stars, Sunday, February 25, 2018, 3PM Jones Auditorium, Meredith College featuring winners from our annual Concerto Competition.  Other featured works are Haydn’s Symphony No. 98 and Copland’s Quiet City. 

Jazz and the Symphony, Sunday, May 6, 2018, 3PM, Jones Auditorium, Meredith College with featured Raleigh pianist, Margaret Evans performing Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G.  Other selections include Kurt Weill’s Symphony No. 2 and Gershwin’s Cuban Overture.

The Free Spirits Ensemble

Our Latin Neighbors, Sunday, September 24, 2017, 3PM, Carswell Recital Hall, Meredith College Featuring music of Cuban Grammy Award winner, Yalil Guerra; Piazzolla’s Le Grand Tango for Cello and Piano; Tango (Por Una Cabeza) by Carlos Gardel and arrange by John Williams are a few of the Latin delights on this program.  We will be featuring local guest artist, Latin Soprano, Teresa Fernandez singing Piazzolla’s Chiquilin de Bachin, Oblivion, Balada por un Loca and El Dia Que Me Quieras by Gardel. 

Holiday Stories through a Child’s Eyes, December 3, 2017, 3PM, Carswell Recital Hall, Meredith College Featuring original holiday stories by Raleigh composer, Lanette Lind set to music:  The Brightest Light portrays children of different faiths sharing with one another at the holidays and Santa’s Gift to the Monsters bringing a whole new perspective of the holidays from a Monster’s point of view!  Also featured will be a musical medley with narration of the behind the scenes stories of everyone’s favorite Christmas carols. 

Soon to Become “Classics”  Sunday, March 11, 2018, 3PM, Carswell Recital Hall, Meredith College Presenting music of living composers that have survived the “test of time” and well on their way to becoming tomorrow’s classics:  Richard Faith’s Cello Sonata; Gary Schocker’s Clarinet Sonata; Muczynski’s Flute Sonata and Yalil Guerra’s Trio for Violin, Cello and Piano. 

Music of Tomorrow, Sunday, April 22, 2018, 3PM, Carswell Recital Hall, Meredith College Featuring new compositions by aspiring composers as part of our DreamMakers Project.  This is the fourth year of this project and already becoming a much sought after honor to have live performances of new works done on a professional concert series.  Other works programmed are:  Trio for violin, clarinet and piano by Richard Faith, A Golden Celebration for violin, cello and piano by Adrienne Albert and Airborne for Flute and piano by Gary Schocker.
