The Free Spirits Ensemble of the Raleigh Symphony

 

The Ink is Still Drying!

An afternoon of premiers and recent works of new composers.  Autumn Reflections by Pulitzer Prize winner, Jennifer Higdon for flute and piano, Circadia by Adrian Albert for saxophone and piano, Lento from Richard Faith’s Clarinet Concert and the world premier by Raleigh composer, Lanette Lind’s Dali’s Dream for Baritone Saxophone and Piano commissioned by Free Spirits member, Wayne Leechford.  Selections also include The Old Lime Tree by Sergei Rudnev and Tristemusette by Rolan Byens for guitar and Sonata in Bb Clarinet and Piano by Gary Schocker.

Cabaret!
Selections include La Tango Nuevo by Adrian Albert for alto saxophone and guitar, Clarinet Boogie by Adrian Albert for clarinet duo and several works by the tango master, Astor Piazzola featuring soprano, Teresa Fernandez.  The Free Spirits Ensemble will present a delightful evening of music, dance, wine and cheese in a cabaret setting.  Jane Salemson, cello; Dan Zehr, bass; Jim Williams clarinet; Teresa Fernandez, soprano; Ed Stephenson, guitar; and, Lanette Lind, piano, will be joined by guest dancer, Jason Laughlin.  After the concert, Jason will also give a brief tango lesson and DJ for your dancing pleasure.  (Limited seating so make your reservations early) For tickets call (919) 546-9755. ($20/person)

Artful Dreams

Drawing inspiration from Monet, composer Jennifer Higdon’s new work: Celestial Hymns for clarinet, violin, viola and piano; Sonata for Two clarinets and Piano by Gary Schocker, Higdon’s Secret and Glass Gardens for solo piano and Night Thoughts by David Kidwell for flute, clarinet, violin and cello. Also featured is a premiere of a new work for baritone saxophone and piano by Elizabeth Raum inspired by the paintings of Chagall, currently unnamed.  Jim Williams, clarinet; Wayne Leechford, baritone saxophone; Lanette Lind, piano’ Warren Ferguson, viola and Ken Ding, cello.    For tickets call (919) 546-9755. In celebration of Richard Faith’s 85th birthday, the Free Spirits Ensemble performs an all Faith concert with a live performance by Richard Faith, himself!  Selections to include newly commissioned Faith work written for Wayne Leechford, baritone sax, a movement from his clarinet concerto and a newly reworked version of Faith’s Fantasy Trio No. 2 for clarinet, violin and piano.  Richard Faith, piano; Lanette Lind, piano; Jim Williams, clarinet, Wayne Leechford, baritone saxophone.  For tickets call (919) 546-9755. The Symphony goes Digital!

RSO will host a live digital event that combines the artistry of world class violinists, Yang Xi and Izabela Spiewak with new age technology.  Today’s youth are very familiar with the “virtual world” brought to us via the Internet and various software simulations.  These special violinists have created a virtual concert hall, complete with concert attire and themselves as guest soloists.  Following the performance will be a discussion of how this was created.  For tickets call (919) 546-9755.  Adults $12, seniors/students $10 children ages 5 – 11 $5 children under 4 are free

A Yuletide Festival

A warm fuzzy holiday event for the entire family!  Featuring guest dancers from the Meredith College Dance Ensemble in a performance of Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake Suite and Sibelius’ Scene with Cranes and Valse Triste.  The evening would not be complete without holiday classics such as Anderson’s Sleigh ride, and A Charlie Brown Christmas by Guaraldi, Walter’s Deck the Hall and V.
